Lessons from a Color-Blind Senior Citizen at the Paint Counter

Picture6

You all know the drill: it’s time to pick a paint color. Cue the internal groan. Trudge to the stack of swatches. Tape a bajillion on the wall. Come back and visit them in every possible form of light. Compare one to the next. Repeat 85 times because it needs to be *perfect* and this is, you’re told by countless experts, how to do it. Hem and haw and refuse to make a decision for weeks because you don’t want to waste money—and, ironically, time—redoing it.The life of a person who cares what their house looks like, right?

And yet.

There I was, standing at the paint counter at ACE Hardware, waiting for my gallon of flat Simply White to be ready. An older gentleman approached the counter with a coupon for a free quart of paint, and, when asked what color he would like, he replied, “Brown.” I smiled a little to myself, finding humor in his oblivion to the thousands of Benjamin Moore color choices laid out in a rainbow behind me, a rainbow that had sucked me in even as a child, enchanting me with its fantastically immense variety of hues. Just “brown”? What was that? He obviously didn’t do what every “How to pick the perfect paint color” guide tells you to do.

Picture1

The worker kindly showed him that rainbow of swatches, instructing him to pick out which specific brown he would like. A few seconds later, the man reappeared at the counter with his chosen swatch, at which point he was informed by the worker that the “brown” he had chosen was not, in fact, brown.

It was purple.

So back the man went with the worker, who selected a few brown swatches from which the man grabbed one, thus ending the quest for “brown” paint. It took him mere seconds.

As I stood there taking in the whole scene, I thought how freeing it would be to have that kind of contentment about a paint color. To simply walk up to the counter and ask for brown, without taping half a million swatches to the wall, without googling images of said brown, without needing the perfect brown to be called something like Mink or French Press. Just brown. And to even be content with it not being brown at all, but purple.

Picture3

And then I thought, Benjamin Moore carries nearly 3,500 paint colors, not including the shades blended for annoying customers like me who ask for it mixed at 50% strength. And dear old Ben is just one of countless brands of paint, each with their own versions of Mink and French Press. At what point did we begin needing hundreds of thousands of choices for our wall colors? At what point did things stop being just brown and start being Chocolate Truffle and Timber and Autumn Dusk? At what point did I decide that it was okay for me to spend a whole lot more than mere seconds agonizing over decisions that don’t actually matter?

I walked away from the paint counter with my Simply White—because just regular off-the-shelf white was not acceptable; I had to have that extra ounce of black added to the gallon—and asked the Lord to not let me forget what I witnessed with the older gentleman. I prayed that I would have the same kind of contentment with the choices I make for our home, not constantly wanting to change or scrutinize or worry about them being “perfect.” I prayed for constant reminders that neither perfection nor happiness actually comes from the “perfect” color or chair or curtain fabric.  A fleeting feeling of perfection and happiness, maybe, but it doesn’t last. It’s not supposed to. This is just stuff of the world.

Picture4

This is not to say that I’ve stopped caring what my house looks like. No, I have been blessed—and cursed—with a critical eye, and I doubt I will ever give up on trying to make our home beautiful. This house is a creative outlet and hobby for both me and Rick, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But it’s not just a matter of “finding balance” with things like hobbies; it’s a matter of prioritizing. Because I can balance a 16 pound bag of cat food, two gallons of milk, four shopping bags of cereal, and my man-eating purse all while attempting to unlock the house door, but that doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. Something will always demand the brunt of my strength. And which of those things wins when they all go crashing to the ground?

See, I want to pick my just brown and move on with life. This goes for every house choice, not just paint. At the end of it all, I want to be able to say a lot more than, “Well, I sure did have some great-looking walls in my house after I painted them 42 times each, and I once spent a lot of marvelous days staring at pages and pages of fabric options.”

Because let’s face it. That’s lame.

The new drill: it’s time to pick a paint color. So I pick one. And am content with it. And learn how love and thankfulness and joy look with those walls as the backdrop.

And with that, “just brown”—yes, even “just brown”—can be perfect.

The Christmas Mantel That Almost Wasn’t

Do you ever feel like you’ve seen something before?

Do you ever feel like you’ve seen something before?*

*I did that in case you answered NO and were envious of all the fine folks who experience déjà vu on a hauntingly frequent basis like when they tell their cat to stop eating the Christmas tree and then five seconds later she is all up in it like white on rice and they tell her to stop eating it. Again.

That’s how I feel when I look at Christmas Mantel 2012, aka The Mantel That Almost Wasn’t Because Erin Parachuted Into a Distant Land Far Removed From Blogging and Christmas Decorating and No She Is Not Pregnant In Case You Were Wondering.

DSC_1135

With the green + silver + natural theme going on again, it is basically the more petite, conservative sister of last year’s “fantel.” The petite, conservative sister who waits until the last minute to pick out her clothes and almost goes to the Christmas work party in her pajamas. The petite, conservative sister who may leave her sparse Christmas decorations up until March because she waited so long to get them out in the first place. The petite, conservative sister who is not planning on actually hanging any ornaments on her tree this year.

You know, that sister.

I don’t know her personally.

DSC_1136

In terms of notable genetic mantel differences: the fake pinecones and the “When Love Came Down” shadow box were not at last year’s family gathering. I made the words using my Cricut (on silver cardstock—the font is Chunk Five). It was fast and easy. Lazy Girl’s Guide to the Holidays is the theme of this year’s Christmas décor.

DSC_1137

Except, wait.

My mantel might be late, lazy, and the less-styled version of last year’s.

But that’s not what this season is all about. (Duh, Erin.)

This season is so much bigger and better than just a time of year when people camp out at malls and drown their yards in inflatable Santas and accidentally on purpose forget to hang ornaments on their tree. It is the time of year we celebrate Love coming down. And I can’t tell you how many times I have already looked at my lazy frame and been reminded of that.

DSC_1139

When love came down. Four simple words that changed the world.

Four simple words that I am happy to see, and remember, over and over again.

Bring on the déjà vu.

Ombre “Heart, Soul, Mind” Print

This exact print has been floating around in my head for a reeeeally long time now. (Things That Take Forever is is apparently the theme around these parts lately.) It was high time I got it out of my head and onto paper.

free printable love the lord your god pink

I made one in every color of the rainbow. Why? Because I didn’t want to do the dishes or fold the laundry. So I can put one in every room of my house. So I can always be reminded of what I am called to do.

free printable love the lord your god orange

Heart, soul, mind: this means saying “see ya later” to my own desires and goals and plans and, instead, fully embracing the Lord’s will for my life and loving him through the good and the bad—no matter what. It’s unnatural. It’s uncomfortable. It’s exactly what he longs for and what he created me to do.

free printable love the lord your god aqua

This, of course, requires a constant reminder to daily surrender my own ambitions and give all of the glory at home and at work to God, for without His gracious and loving gifts, I’d not be able to do any of it.

I would love to share this print! Just go here and send me a message with the color(s) you want, or mention it in a comment. I’ll gladly send the PDF of the file to you via email. Please don’t be shy!

What did you do this weekend instead of the dishes and laundry? Who has seen the Lord working in their life lately? I’d love to hear about it. :)

Free Printable: The Old has Gone, the New Has Come

You all know that I like to give things makeovers. I like to take the hideous, the unwanted, the tarnished, and make them pretty again. I drag them off of the curb and give them new life.

It recently occurred to me that Jesus does the same thing. But his area of refinishing is better than lamps and dressers: he refinishes people. You and me. Every day.

I get excited when the Lord makes something clear to me in terms that match my interests and gifts. Because just like me and my thrift store rejects, He takes the unlovable, the outcast, the stained, the broken…and He makes them new. The song “Jesus, Friend of Sinners” by Casting Crowns has cut straight to my soul lately, and one of the verses in the song says, “You love every lost cause. You reach for the outcast, for the leper and the lame; they're the reason that You came. Lord, I was that lost cause, and I was the outcast. But you died for sinners just like me, a grateful leper at Your feet.”

I won’t try to say it better than that.

redeemdcoral

The word “redeemed” means “bought or paid off; cleared by payment.” It might be cliché, but it’s true: Jesus paid the debt He didn’t owe, so that we could be made new and unblemished in His name.

redeemedgreen

I read an article by Ron Hutchcraft last week about a young boy who was trying to move a big rock, tugging and shoving, but to no avail. He went to his father and said, “I’ve tried everything!” to which his father responded: “No, you haven’t. You haven’t tried me.”

Well when you put it that way.

God moves rocks. God moves mountains. God can weed out the old and the ugly so that the new can take root and blossom, when we are willing to fully give those rocks to him.

If you would like this print for you or someone you know, I would love to share it. And if the colors above don’t rock your socks off, no worries: I made about a million three other colors, too. (I blame it on having the summer off.) Just go here and send me a message with the color(s) you want, or mention it in a comment. I’ll gladly send the PDF of the file(s) to you via email. Please don’t be shy! I still occasionally get email requests for these printable scripture cards, which I think is so, so cool.

redeemedall1) coral/chartreuse; 2) aqua/red; 3) green/blue; 4) orange/teal; 5) pink/orange; 6) purple/aqua

I’d also like to extend an open invitation for prayer. Just email me. Recently, I’ve started a goal of praying for 10 people before I fall asleep at night. Sometimes I make it though all 10, and sometimes I don’t, but I have been, in those 10, praying for several bloggy friends who are dealing with “big rocks.” I know that God wants me to use the relationships I’ve established through this blog for His purposes, not mine. So again: please don’t be shy. It would truly be a blessing to me to be able to pray for you, and it doesn’t even have to be about anything specific if you aren’t comfortable sharing details.

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

2 Corinthians 5:17

I hope you all have a great weekend!

The “Good Morning” Song

If you’re anything like me, you don’t like workday mornings. Especially Monday mornings, like this one. I don’t exactly leap out of bed shouting “Gleeful golly gumdrops! Another work week has begun!” (Maybe I would if “gleeful golly gumdrops” was actually a part of my vocabulary.) But I recently discovered a song that seriously makes me dance. Picture me dancing frenetically with awkward fist pumping, jumping up and down and causing the cats to flee under the nearest piece of furniture for safety.

True story.

It’s called, appropriately enough, “Good Morning.” Remember Mandisa from American Idol? She sings it. (She, by the way, is a perfect example of how God’s way is not our own: she wanted to win Idol, no doubt, but the Lord had a much better plan for her. Idol was only the beginning.) Seriously, it makes me dance. I’m putting this song on a CD to listen to every day on my way to work. Because why shouldn’t I begin my day dancing? Why shouldn’t I begin my day with a smile on my face?

Some lyrics that speak to my heart:

Mandisa Good Morning - Official Lyric Video - YouTube - Mozilla Firefox 342012 31215 PM.bmp

Each new day is an opportunity to start over. I dwell on discouraging yesterdays too often—and what is it doing for me? Absolutely nothing. Wave it away.

Mandisa Good Morning - Official Lyric Video - YouTube - Mozilla Firefox 342012 31306 PM.bmp

This song reminds me that every morning should be a good morning, not just the mornings on Saturday or the mornings on a day I have something fun planned: every morning I’m alive is a good morning, because I’m incredibly blessed and I’m resting in the promise of the Lord’s faithfulness and justice.

Mandisa Good Morning - Official Lyric Video - YouTube - Mozilla Firefox 342012 31418 PM.bmp

He will give me all the strength that I need to get through everything the coming day will hand me. And let me tell you, I have had some rough days at work this year. But when I can not only acknowledge but truly believe that everything that comes my way is either decreed by Him or allowed by Him, suddenly the weight of circumstances disappears. Suddenly every morning is a good morning. Truly, what is there to be grumpy about?

So—let’s see if you can resist dancing like a maniac and scaring away your cats or your coworkers. And just try not to smile or tap your foot. I dare you.

Good morning!

LOVE it. And I love that it gets stuck in my head, making me feel like dancing all day long, even when the kid with the droopy pants tells me to stop bugging out and the girl with the ginormous fake nails tells me that she doesn’t care about passing. Inside, I’m still dancing. And it’s glorious.

Are you a morning person? What do you do in the morning to help you get started with the right attitude?

DIY Scripture Cards

School has, for the past month or so, brought what seems like an endless string of trials into my life. I have been literally knocked to my knees with the overwhelming weight of the resulting personal stress. In the midst of it all, it has been hard to remember that there is nothing in my life that the Lord does not either decree or allow, and that He has had me in the palm of His loving hand even when I’ve felt at my absolute lowest.

These Bible verses have spoken to me immensely during this time, so I decided to turn them into little scripture cards that I could print on cardstock as daily reminders of God’s goodness and love, and His promise to be faithful no matter what.

page0001

Picture1

On the backs, I printed images (all free, downloaded from the Graphics Fairy blog) of vintage objects that spoke to me: I’ve unlocked a new understanding of God’s goodness through this, I’ve been more in tune with the direction He wants me to be facing, I’ve rested in His embrace, and He knows everything I’ve gone through…just like He knows everything a single sparrow endures.

DSC_1112

DSC_1114

Life looks remarkably different when viewed through the lens of the Lord’s grace and peace instead of through my own faulty and flawed human eyes. God is before all things, above all things, and is in control of all things, and that includes the trials brought about by this temporary life.

DSC_1143

Through this storm, I’m learning to trust that “all good things work together for good to those who love God and are called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28) Through this storm, I’ve read my Bible more. I’ve prayed more, out loud and without inhibition. For the first time in my life, I’ve forgiven near-strangers who have openly and unjustly attacked me, and I’ve felt the peace of the Lord envelop me. This is all good. I do not believe that the Lord decreed for me to emotionally suffer at the hands of others, but I do believe that He allowed this pain and used this pain for good, knowing that it would serve to draw me closer to Him and to bring a light to others who may be going through something similar.

DSC_1125

If having these cards as a daily reminder could uplift you or someone you know, I would love to share them. I’ll gladly send the PDF of the file or print out the cards and mail them to you personally. Just go here and send me a message, or mention it in your comment. Please don’t be shy!

Before the holiday rush began…

Before the holiday rush began, before gift wrap, inflatable Santas, and the general belief that if you are a recording artist you must do a cover of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”…there was a baby. And a mother. And a plan of redemption made real in the unsuspecting shadows of a simple manger. This is the reason for not only Christmas, but also the peace and hope that we’re blessed with in every season of the year.

So that’s why, as we celebrate Christmas this year, we’re remembering several things.

We’re remembering that this is the greatest Christmas story.

DSC_0977

We’re remembering that this is the greatest Christmas light.

And we’re remembering that this is the greatest Christmas present, sent with no gift expected in return.

Free Printable: Fearfully & Wonderfully Made

Teaching adolescents, I see how cruel they can be to each other for no reason at all other than owning the "wrong" clothing, using the "wrong" makeup, wearing the "wrong" hairstyle. For instance, I had a female student last year who was constantly pointing out the flaws of her classmates and wrote a paper entitled "How to Not Be Ugly," in which she included helpful tips like "watch Jersey Shore" and "only buy Victoria's Secret pants." I cringe knowing that someday, hopefully, she will cringe, too, at her flippancy and shallowness. This same student once told me that "I should go tanning; I'd be so pretty." I smiled at her when she provided this unsolicited beauty tip and remarked that I was content with myself, that I was more concerned with improving other aspects of my life.

Her comment has not, however, kept me from admiring the healthy glowing tans of some fellow teachers and friends, the irony, of course, being that fair skin is actually healthy, and tan skin is not.

Unfortunately, this student's attitude about appearance, I'm sure, is not at all new from centuries of adolescents--and adults--gone by. We live in a world that is constantly picking away at our natural selves and telling us what we are not. Your skin is not the right color. You do not have attractive thighs. Your cheekbones are not pronounced. You are not tall enough. You are not skinny enough. Your bangs are not cut right. Your body is not shapely. Your clothes are not in style.

You're not, you're not, you're not.

When did we get away from what we are?  Because the truth is, we are fearfully and wonderfully made, exactly as we are. My fair skin is wonderfully made. So is my barely perceptible need for a 34A bra. So is my nose that sometimes feels too big. So is my struggle with acne (still.). So is my bone-y butt. So is my left foot that is bigger than my right foot. So are my shoulders that sometimes look too broad for a halter top.

To print, simply click on the image, then right click and save to your computer. You can then resize as needed. Click here to view my other free printable.

God makes no mistakes. Beauty is fleeting. The only thing eternal is what's on the inside. No tanning booth, push-up bra, facial treatment will save my soul or make me happy. It's easy to say, but difficult to remember, and even harder to live by.

There can never be a more beautiful you. Remember that next time the world, a mirror, or a careless 14 year-old tells you otherwise.

Let's get this week started off on a positive note, shall we? :)

Here's some inspiration, encouragement, and smiles that I've found around the world wide web lately.

Something to inspire you:

This antique key plate pendant would be totally cool to DIY, and I bet it could be made for a lot less than the selling price of $600.

 Something to encourage you:

So true. We've learned this time and time again. I could write a book about how I got my teaching job and how much I battled God's timing until, in the end, I could look back and see how it had been perfect every step of the way. Every trial, every uncertainty, every setback had to happen in order to get me where I am today. (Seriously, if you're struggling with unemployment, email me. I would love to share my story with you and pray for you.)

 Something to make you smile:

Apology accepted. Thanks for caring.

Inspired to go outside and take in the intricacy and beauty of God's world, inspired to try your own hand at re-creating a gorgeous piece of nature, inspired to eat cupcakes. Or all three. (Are those not the most gorgeous cupcakes you've ever seen?)

Something to encourage you:

God is bigger than everything. His ways are not our ways. (Thank goodness.) His plans are perfect and upheld by His promise that He will never leave us nor forsake us.

Something to make you smile:

Kate's heart-warming story about a banana tree, a beverage cart, and missing her dad. This actually inspired me, encouraged me, and made me smile. :)

Free Printable: Depths of my Heart

I have fun with this blog. I do. I like projects, and writing about them, and sharing the joy that we have in our home. Lately, though, the Lord's been tugging at my heart to make this blog more than just a place to document our latest projects, because, really, these projects mean nothing in the grand scheme of What Matters in Life. What matters in life, you ask? For us, what matters is building a life together that honors, glorifies, and serves Jesus Christ in everything we do. Despite the fact that I find it incredibly interesting, Jesus cares not about what paint color I choose for the bedroom. But I know that if I use that interest as a vehicle to share His grace and love with people who have a common interest, He will smile. And who doesn't want to make Jesus smile?

I've struggled with this pull, even though I know it's real and I want to be in the center of His will. Instead of obeying, I've questioned: What if, Lord, nobody wants to read about that? What if people mock me? What if people stop following my blog?

It hit me just last night about the problem with this concept of following. Following. I wish I could call it something else. Because frankly, I don't desire for anyone to follow me. There is nothing about me that is better than anyone else, that deserves to be paid attention to more than anyone else. Winning followers for Christ is far more important than earning followers of our house, of the things of this earth. This house and the gifts we've been blessed with are all from the one true God who deserves not just some of the glory and honor and praise for this life and everything in it, but all of it, every day. This stuff isn't meant to be worshiped. This is not to say that I will never discuss our house again. Of course I will! It's my hobby, and there's nothing wrong with that. Home improvement, creating...it's still my thing. Jesus fits here perfectly, in fact, because He will provide the best kind of home improvement, and He was willing to pay for it. :)

Luke 9:23 says, "Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me."  There are some scary words in there. Deny myself. My fears, my own ambitions, my personal desires. Daily. No exceptions. Not just on Sundays. Take up a cross.

Follow me.

Follow me.

Follow me.

Okay.

So here's a free printable, my first installment of sharing the love of the Lord in a way that still aligns with the established content of this blog. I won't pretend to be a graphic designer, but I'm pretty sure that the concept of "Make a joyful noise unto the Lord" applies here as well: you don't have to sound like a rock star in order to sing praises to the Lord. Therefore, this printable might not be designer-worthy, but it shares a message that means a lot to me, and if it encourages just one person, then I know I've done the right thing.

Taken from Chris Tomlin's song "Indescribable": "You know the depths of my heart and you love me the same." You love me the same. You know my sin, my fears, my desires, my unspoken thoughts, my weaknesses. You love me the same. No matter where you've been and what you've done, God is a forgiving God and He loves you. He wants the best for you. That kind of unconditional love is unfathomable, but there would be nothing amazing about a God that we could 100% comprehend.

I've included 6 different colors, but if you want to print one and these colors aren't quite right for you, please let me know. I'll happily edit it and send it to you for free.

Also, I've never done this before, so please let me know if chaos ensues and you're having trouble with anything. I think you'll need Adobe Acrobat to view and print them since they are saved as PDFs.

Click on the links to view each color.

Top row, left to right: Blue & Orange, Yellow & Green, Blue & Green

Bottom row, left to right: Pink & Orange, Red & Blue, Pink & Blue

Again, please let me know if you are unable to download or open anything OR if my blog makes your computer spontaneously combust because it is in way over its bloggy head and has no idea what it is doing.  :)

True Confessions of an Imperfect Homeowner

I don't know about you, but my house isn't perfect. The curtains I spent an hour ironing last night are still wrinkly, there is still a blue tint in gray paint #2 that we chose for our bay window room, and we didn't make the bed this morning. And you know what? I am totally okay with all of this. Thrilled, even! I am so thankful for all the Lord has blessed us with, and at the end of the day (and this life!) it will not matter how well my pillows coordinate with my couch, how many people comment on my posts, and whether or not my house is magazine-worthy. (Good thing, too, because it never, ever will be.) Projects and blogging are "my thing" not because I want to pretend that we are Super Genius Homeowners Who Can Do It All and Then Some, nor because I want to become A Super Famous Blogger. Very simply, I create and blog because they are a serious and much-needed de-stresser from my days at school. I love that I can write without worrying about a thesis statement, or what the minimum number of pages needs to be, or how to cite that article I found on www.i-don't-really-care-what-sophocles-meant-by-that.com. (Fellow graduates of a liberal arts college, you know what I mean.)

So in the spirit of being a real (not Super) human being who blogs about her projects and her house but knows that she can find joy in--but not obsess and envy over--the things of this earth, I've decided to start a True Confessions of an Imperfect Homeowner feature in which I don't just focus on the pretty "afters," but the little things that let me know that I shouldn't take this "I like decorating my house" thing too seriously.

To get us started, I'd like to take a moment to discuss my cats. More specifically, their fur. The floors, the stairs, the comforter, the curtains, the chair I'm sitting on, my butt when I stand up, Rick's rainbow sherbet (true story)...they're all covered in cat hair. It's the time of year when we sit and sweat, and they sit and shed. Seriously. I don't know how they aren't bald. I've asked them that very question, but they never answer.

I get frustrated with how frequently I have to dust and vacuum every surface unless I want to live in a giant hairball, and I'm not a fan of pulling up the comforter at night (which is dark gray, meaning every little speck of fur shows up--super fine choice, Erin) and inhaling a big blob of fur. I wish my house was just a tad more presentable, and I've been known to make myself crazy right before company comes over. But then I think about how much joy and laughter those two little kitties bring me, and how grateful I am to not be allergic to them, and what would our couch really look like without one of them curled up on it, and how, really, that much fur would be on any comforter: I can just more easily see that it needs to be cleaned on this one. And that's a plus, right? In the words of Legally Blonde the Musical: "Keep it positive." (The song goes on to say something about slapping someone to the floor, but that's not usually part of my mantra.)

I will NOT feel badly about something that just about every pet owner has to deal with. It doesn't make my house any less perfect for us. In fact, it really makes our home MORE perfect for us.

When I tuck myself in at night, whether I'm choking on fur or not, I have to be able to look back on my day and hope that I not only stayed positive and realistic about my life, my house, my plans, but also that I kept my heart where it mattered: my relationship with my husband, my relationship with my family, and my relationship with the Lord, the only one who deserves any glory or honor about the house and gifts that we've been blessed with, ever.

Anyone else have a true confession of an imperfect home to share? :)

Getting two birds with one tree?

So. We have this tree outside our dining room window. And it has recently come to our attention that it is apparently quite a popular place to give birth.

Lest you think I am talking about human births in our tree (which would be, of course, quite eco-chic but also incredibly awkward--just imagine the dinner conversations! On second thought, please don't.)--I'll get to the point of what is actually being born in this tree:

You can just see the babies peeking out from underneath her.

Yes, we have not just one mama bird using our tree as a hatching spot, but two: the mourning dove above and a robin. We've been watching them for a few days now, and we think that the babies all hatched sometime within the past 24 hours!

Fuzzy blurs=robin babies. I promise.

We tried to get better pictures of them (picture me hanging out the window, taking a picture and singing Happy Birthday to the baby birdies while smiling politely at the neighbors that walked by, as Rick tried to keep Gingerbread from launching herself into the tree and singing her own evil version of Happy Birthday to the tune of the Jaws theme song) but Mama Robin was a bit shy and flew away every time I came near. I don't think it was because of my singing, either.

Those tiny baby birdies, so dependent on their mothers but so perfectly and wonderfully formed, are just another reminder of God's amazing hand in this world He has created. As the old hymn goes, "His eye is on the sparrow, so I know He's watching me." And in Luke 12:6-7: "Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: you are of more value than many sparrows."

If you're in the northeast like I am, I hope you're enjoying the beautiful outdoors and this beautiful weather! :)

A matter of priority.

I'd feel ridiculously self-serving if I were to post something about my disappointment with our latest paint choice, or my plans for our bedroom carpet, without acknowledging at all what is happening in Japan.

Because while my morning is being "ruined" by the student who spouts choice words at me on his way to the principal's office, there are people in Japan that have come face to face with the real meaning of "ruined."

Because while I'm worrying about stenciled birdhouses in my bathroom and bemoaning the wall-to-wall carpeting in the kitchen, there are people in Japan that don't have a house at all.

It bothers me that I can feel so completely unchanged and unaffected by a disaster of such enormous magnitude, that my week can continue with the same predictable roadbumps getting in my way. I simply have to take pause and thank God for His blessing, His provision, and His hedge of protection around us, knowing very well that all of that could change in a matter of minutes; believing all the same that no matter what, I'm resting in unchanging and everlasting arms, and so are the people in Japan. Truly, that is the only solid rock we can rest any fears upon.

"On Christ the solid rock I stand; all other ground is sinking sand."

Nobody planned for a massive earthquake, a devastating tsunami, explosions and fire, the threat of radiation. Nobody wrote "death toll soaring into the thousands" on their calendar. "Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the Lords purpose that prevails." I thank the Lord that I can lean on Him even in the light of unplanned circumstances.

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
Jeremiah 29:11
