Earring Storage: Birdcages Aren’t Just For Birds

Whoever said birdcages were for birds had never met my earring collection.

use a birdcage to display earringsBirdcages for birds. What a radical concept. It’s like saying toast is for toasters. I mean, really.

This is not to say I have a lot of earrings; I suppose by some standards (Rick’s) I might, but by others (Kim Kardashian’s) I have a humble, meager collection. The problem was that ever since I got my hair cut back in April, I have been drawn to larger, more dangly earrings that take center stage with hair that shows them off, versus my old standby favorites: small pearls. And these large earrings were getting seriously cramped and messy in my jewelry box that had exactly 4 little cubicles for earrings. So when I spotted this unused birdcage candleholder collecting dust in my craft room (Unused? Collecting dust? What, my crap craft room?) I decided to try hanging some of my earrings on it.

And I liked what I saw.

And in case you were wondering, that is the giant ampersand hanging behind it. It’s been there for, oh, several months. Someday I will show it in full view on my blog.

other uses for birdcages

And in case you were also wondering, I pay no more than $5-$6 for a pair of earrings. My favorite haunts are Target and New York & Company. Just about all of the ones hanging there are from one of those two places, and most cost under $5 on sale/with coupons.

What are your go-to earring stores? How do you display your jewelry? Do you use birdcages in socially acceptable ways?

  3. It's so pretty! I love the birdcage idea a lot. I have a jewellery display as well. I like to keep rings and small earrings in vintage glass dishes. Larger earrings are on a stand, and I drape necklaces and bracelets over decor objects.

  9. I adore how that looks! And I love 100% of your earrings. I just put together a jewelry display not too long ago so I could see everything I own. Sooo much better than digging in a drawer to find stuff. The necklace part was from an old paper towel holder haha!!

  13. This is a fun idea but I have a bird phobia so cages are a no go.

I do, however, love earrings. Target is my go to store.

  14. I have a gorgeous turquoise bird cage and I also use it to hang earrings from. I rarely buy earrings because I make my own, hundreds of them. lol

  18. I have 5 holes, but haven't worn earrings for awhile ... maybe I would if I had a cute birdcage to display them. :)

  19. I have a birdcage collecting dust right now... and a RIDICULOUS collection of giant earrings (which I love and Andy hates)...

Do you have Charming Charlies near you? They have a clearance section that sucks me in every time. I get earrings there for a buck pretty often. LOVE it.

  20. That cage is way to small for a bird anyway! It looks so cute with your pretty earrings. I tend to wear the exact same ones everyday, and any extras are shoved in random places. I'd like to organize everything, but it just never seems to happen. Someday, someday...

I found a cute way to disply my earring years ago - take an old wooden picture frame and staple a piece of metal screen to the inside where the glass usually goes, then cover the backing with pretty paper or black velvet, replace the backing and stand it up like a picture. Hang your earrings thru the little holes in the screen and they become the picture! These are even great to give as gifts. I purchase most of my earrings at a store here in Austin called Hannah D's. They are usually between $3-$5 each pair. I love the idea of using the bird cage to display your earrings, though because it's a 4-sided display and can hold more earrings!

  23. This is such an adorable way to display your earrings! And o my - you have so many cute earrings, makes me want to go out and get some fun ones! However,
I do some have black feather earrings, they would definitely look awesome on a birdcage :)
