My Childhood, Boxed…and the First Pillow I Ever Made

When daughters become homeowners, moms clean out their attics. When moms clean out their attics, daughters become the owners of their childhood things.

When daughters become the owners of their childhood things, they take a stroll down memory lane, smiling at the thought of these books…

…and these books…

…and daughters begin to wonder if they did anything except read in their childhood (the answer is basically no) until they find these paper dolls…

…and this pillow. Um, what?

We probably need to see that from another angle. Because it is just that awesome.

Yes, folks, it is a washcloth pillow, handcrafted by me circa 4th grade, I think in Girl Scouts. Don’t even pretend you don’t want one. Just think of the multi-purpose nature it brings to the table. Rest your head, wash your armpit. There has got to be a market for these. Especially for ratty old dingy ones that, from the looks of things, may have been used to wash a cow’s rear end right after the cow trampled it.

Needless to say, all of the above but a certain washcloth pillow now live in my attic. The washcloth pillow clearly lives on my bed. Except for when it lives in the garbage can, which is always.

RIP washcloth pillow. It’s been real. Or phat. Or dope. Or whatever words may have been used in the 90s to describe your presence. Only not by me, because I was too busy reading much more sophisticated words in The Babysitters Club #110: Abby the Bad Sport.

What were you most likely to be found doing when you were little? Were any of those books favorites of yours? Who thinks a washcloth pillow is the exact accessory that has been missing from their life?

    1. bahaha we will take the design world by storm. Is there a way to work in those beanies that were a part of the uniform? And maybe a latrine in honor of the primitive camping that we did?

  3. Memories. My parents keep pulling that trick of bringing things to my house. My mom is a hoarder though and I just tell her I'm throwing it all out...so she takes it back with her. Hoarding parent for the win.

  4. Love this post! That's a *tight* washcloth pillow ;) I loved the Babysitter's Club. Another favorite was Junie B. Jones!

  5. OK, the washcloth pillow definitely has a use! I need a pillow for my tub and that would be perfect! I was definitely a reader when I was little and the American Girls series was my favorite. I saw that you had some AG paper dolls in that box.

    1. Oh I was a huge AG fan too! I had Kirsten. :) She's still at my parents' house, though, along with my million Barbies. So it wasn't my entire childhood that arrived, just part of it.

  6. You were quite the reader!! I loved the babysitters club too! And I'm with Cassie- Amelia Bedelia is pretty awesome too! I love that your mom kept all this for you! It's so nice to go over all those things that meant so much to you when you were little.

    Have a great weekend!

  8. can we be friends? anyone with that many "BSC" books should come over, drink wine, and discuss how awesome SUPER MYSTERIES were.

  9. Are you serious!?! Did you not ask your fur babies if they wanted the lovely washcloth pillow? Heartless!

Nancy Drew & Laura Ingalls Wilder were elementary faves, for sure. Somebody needs to nag the hubs to build her library shelves.

  10. What a nice walk down memory lane. You had a good mom to save all your childhood treasures :)

  11. Lol, oh my gosh! You are so funny. Isn't it awesome, the things we made as kids? I was most often found reading, too -- Sweet Valley High books! :-)

  12. My mom keeps nagging me about getting my childhood stuff out of the basement...I just tell her that I have no place to put it. Oh I love that my house is a complete remodel so it's actually true I have no where to put anything.

  13. That's too funny! I'm making one of those NOW!

I'm considerably older than you and most of your readers! They didn't have the Babysitter's Club out way back then but did I see a Pippy Longstocking book in that pile? I always wanted to be her - she was the coolest chick!

  14. And when daughters remind moms that there are tons of DOLLS still in the attic, moms sometimes immediately & gleefully pack all those things up & arrive at their daughter's house in the dark of night with an unexpected delivery...

  15. I read my way through my childhood too - and The Babysitters Club was right there up at the top of my list. I wasn't ambitious or creative enough, though, to be making pillows at that age. Impressive!

  16. Pretty sure I read and/or owned about 90 percent of those books. Babysitters Club 4eva!

  17. Did you and your friends try to make your own babysitters club, or was that just me and my nerdy friends?
I love the idea of a washcloth pillow...may have to pin that one. ;)

  18. Oh yeah, books and puzzles. That was my childhood. I actually chose a few of my favourite books and had a photographer friend take some great shots of them. Then I got rid of the books. I had saved them for the kids but they hated them:( So not cool, mom.

  19. Our reading lists look pretty similar, although I shied away from the Babysitter's club for some reason. I did have the same boxed set of Laura Ingalls Wilder's books though. And Pippi. And the Boxcar Children. And American Girl's books. And almost everything I could get my hands on.

Oh, and that looks way better than my first pillow. It was a heart that I sewed on the sewing machine for my mom - I wasn't any better at sewing curves then than I am now.

  20. The washcloth pillow was definitely girl scouts, I have one too haha - mine has survived the years better than yours though it seems! and yay for BSC!!!!

Loved the Boxcar Children and Pippi Longstockings! Of course I also read the Baby Sitters Club. I was the only kid I knew whose parents would tell to stop reading.
