“I got new brown shoes.” “My brother is having a birthday party.” “I’m going to help decorate the Christmas tree.” This is the stuff of a kindergarten journal. More specifically, my kindergarten journal. But in addition to mundane daily reports of my young life, I also had quite a few entries devoted to my mama.
Her pungent perms…
Her help with clothing…
Her kitchen concoctions…
Her job, and the times I could see her.
I fully intend to hang some of these on a wall someday. Because even though I now know how to spell “cider” and my mom no longer has a perm or outfits that match mine…
…she will still help me whenever, wherever, and I continue to form sweet memories with her every time we are together.
And on occasion, she still does pour my milk.
What are some of your early mama memories? Who remembers having a daily journal in elementary school?
Happy Mother’s Day to all you mamas out there! :)
LOVE this! so fun! i love reading things i wrote as a child- these are so cute. of course in 1992 i was a freshman in high school.....
ReplyDeleteSuch a sweet entry! My primary school journal is a hoot. My favourite entry is age around 5 or 6 and it says "the cat had his bols cot off" (haaaa). My favourite thing is my teacher corrected it to "balls cut off". (haaaa)
ReplyDeletehaha umm is that what it was supposed to say?! One can never be sure with little kids, I guess....
DeleteSo cute! What a fun little post. I dont think I have anything from my school days like this but it makes me want to look.
ReplyDeleteAwww, you two are so cute! My kid stuff is so boring. My brother on the other hand........bloody squirrels, ET with guns. I'm still surprised the kid isn't a serial killer.
ReplyDeleteSo what you're trying to say is that you were always a hilarious writer? Seriously, that is so funny! I love how you spelled cider. My kid stuff was super nerdy. I was THAT kid who was the annoying know it all. Oh, well. :)
ReplyDeleteThis is too cute! I can see those shoulder pads in the last drawing...those were the days!
ReplyDeletehahaha shoulder pads...
DeleteLove this!! We read my younger brothers journal last year when we found it and it was hysterical!! Definitely going to keep all my children's journals because they come up with the best stuff!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I have an entry from when I’m a little older (no pictures anymore…) about my mom accidentally washing my brother with his underwear instead of a washcloth. My teachers loved my journals. :P
DeleteHA! This is awesome. I love the perm one...but aren't they stinky? :) I hope you and your mom had a lovely day yesterday.
ReplyDeleteLove this. Absolutely love it! What a cool thing to have, and what memories!
ReplyDeleteHaha! I love this! Those journal entries are so cute and this is such a unique and fun way to acknowledge your mom. :)
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this!! Thanks for sharing your childhood with us!
ReplyDeleteThese are amazing!!
ReplyDeleteAmazing penmanship for a Kindergartner! And your drawings are well-developed for that age. Sooooo -- you could've become an art teacher instead of English (unless, of course, you still draw like this...)
ReplyDeletehaha it's funny that you say that because for a few minutes in my life I wanted to be an art teacher. Then I figured out that I had more skills in "crafts" than "arts." Art school would've been a total bomb.
DeleteThis post certainly touched my heart. Thanks to my sweet daughter for this - the best kind of Mother's Day gift!
ReplyDeleteI also must compliment your artwork. Even though not a single mermaid or rainbow was to be seen on these pages, I realized that the chair in the Christmas dress journal is my ice-cream store/sewing chair. How could I have not noticed that before? It's an amazingly accurate depiction of it!
(And I was glad to see that the "washing your brother with his underwear" journal entry made a guest appearance in the comment section. Always a crowd pleaser.)
I am pretty sure I recall that particular journal entry. Happy Belated Mommy's Day to my second Mommy!
DeleteLove, Rachel
Since I belong to a family of packrats, I'm sure my Mom has my early elementary journals saved somewhere and I'm sure they feature some stellar writing. (By the way, your 5-year-old handwriting is better than many of my jr. high students' handwriting.) I even won the "Best Journal Writer" award at camp when I was 12.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I believe I had that exact same pastel sweater back in the day! Unfortunately, my Mom didn't have a matching one.
How stinkin cute! I'm sad I didn't have a journal in elementary like yours but I do have letters that I would write to my mom. You know the ones you would keep folding into a little triangle. Ahh memories....Loved reading this! Mandy
ReplyDeleteSo cute. I think everyone I know a picture of similar 80's sweatshirts. The lesson: Don't follow the crowd people.
ReplyDeleteOmg, too cute! Love that you and your mom had matching outfits :)
ReplyDeleteHands down, best post ever...and that's hard to do.
ReplyDeleteYou made me laugh out loud. I read the perm one three times.
Hilarious as a kid...you haven't changed so much, huh? ;) Except for the outfits...not such a bad idea.
You two are so cute. :)
