$3 Side Table Makeover

This time last year, we were shoveling our driveway. This time this year, I’m spray painting in my driveway. Given the near-70 degree weather we had over the weekend, I decided it was high time I did something about a $3 side table that I picked up at a yard sale last spring. Here it is after it spent some quality time with me in the driveway:

And here it is before our QT in all its fake wood glory. I took this picture after I took the stained brassy handles off and was too lazy too efficient to put them back on just for a blog photo.

I used this spray paint on the handles…

…and I used Rustoluem 2X for the table itself, first giving it a coat of oil-based spray primer since it isn’t real wood and the spray paint might not adhere as well.

It’s going to live in our living room, but that room has been going through some serious puberty lately and is not ready to show its face. Something about growing pains.

So that’s one of the ways I took advantage of a beautiful March weekend. Our cats are loving it as much as we are, evidenced by the fact that this picture was taken approximately 0.136 seconds after I opened the windows.

I don’t even think the kitties were in the room at the time. They can sense fresh air/birds that are now no longer protected by a pane of glass from anywhere…

What’s the weather like where you are? Did you get anything accomplished this weekend?

  3. I love the color choice. Welcome to 2012 pretty little table!

Ike has loved the windows open. Be glad cats can't bark...

    1. Haha yeah barking…no thanks. But they DO make weird chirping noises at the birds/bugs/debris floating through the air that may or may not be visible to the human eye. We laugh at them because they think they sound fierce and they really sound like crickets…

  4. Love the color and all the detail on the table. So pretty. Our weather hit record highs yesterday and supposed to again today. 85!!! it's kinda crazy. I will be sad if we completely skip spring and go straight into summer.

  10. You have some of the best yard sale pickups. It makes me excited for yard sale season again.

It's been oddly warm here in the Philly area. The windows are open and the fans are in them.

  11. That table is a great find! You really do find the best stuff!! I love the top carved detail and the colour you chose is perfect! Can't wait to see it in it's final spot.

  12. I've seen an end table like this on Richmond's Craigslist, but never imagined what to do with it! You are so creative! And find the best deals!

  13. That's it. I'm gonna hire you as my personal furniture buyer. I CANNOT get over how gorgeous that piece is!

Speaking of open windows, I made the mistake of enjoying the lovely breeze this weekend too. The dogs were inside with me. The scene was placid. Then I heard a faint sound, like the closing of a flap. I got up, looked around (dog #1 was beside me) but oh no, it cannot be! A flash of blonde fur across the street?! Dog #2?! He was just here!! But the Blonde Bandit needed only a moment to erupt from the house (through the window screen) and surge down the street in a frothy, mad pursuit of the neighborhood feline, Tux.
Needless to say, our window-opening policies have now changed.
    Anyone need a dog?

  14. You did a great job spray painting that table. I would have globs because of my impatience. LOL! Our cats did the same thing as soon as I opened the windows. I won't show your picture to my cats as they would be super jealous of that lovely window bench. Mine will have to make do with window sills and nearby chairs and tables.

  15. I have a table much like this one that we inherited somewhere along the way... From Hubby's grandparents maybe. I never thought of painting it so it could look just a little less awful as I wait for something better to replace it!

Dogs do the same thing. And then they do the pee-pee dance when in reality they just want to look into the house through the open windows. (I have strange dogs.)

Saturday the weather was nice. I didn't do anything. Sunday the weather was decent but overcast...I saved a dog and did a homework assignment. Monday it downpoured and stormed and was horrible out...I did two homework assignments and two-stepped with an 85 year old cowboy....we also did the waltz... (and no I am not making this up...there is a photo on FB)

    1. hahahaha did you have to use your awesome Girl Scout self-defense skills on that 85-year old, or was it a mutual dance agreement? ;)

  17. The side table looks great!

And my cat does that too - I think she knows when I'm about to open a door/window before it even happens. I sometimes wonder if she feel like we're imprisoning her :)

  18. that looks awesome! i love the color you chose.

our cats assume the same position the second i open a window or door...i didn't realize you had 3!!

  19. Cool table! I do the same thing as your cats when it gets nice enough to open windows. :)

  20. This is funny, but years ago my parents had side tables almost identical to the one you picked up. I wish they'd known how much better they'd have looked painted gray...

  21. holy freaking amazing. i love it.

  22. What a gorgeous wanna-be-reading-corner window seat you have in that bay! So surprised not to see a myriad of pillows piled there...

I totally had that very same hideous end table in my first apartment; but spray painting faux wood wasn't cool in the 90's, so I "lost" it in my move to Phoenix.

  23. I also have a memory of an end table like that at my grandparents' house, but the new paint really makes it feel modern. It's totally transformed.
The weekend here was very cold and I did not get a lot done. On the other hand, it was a nice break.

  24. Can't beat that $3 table with a stick! LOVE the color you used.

  25. What a deal! I love it and the color you chose for the handles is perfect with the gray! I love those big windows too, bring on the sun!

  26. That came out great. You can't beat spray paint.

  27. Great job! You were smart to snag that table--i'm sure lots of people would have passed it in up in its plastic state, but just look at it now! Good tip about using the oil-based primer. Isn't it amazing how the "wood grain" looks real with the spray-painted finish? Cool!

  28. Tres dólares? For real? You rock. So does your paint job. Can't wait to see the grown up room. :)

Btw...did your cats multiply? I thought you only had two. Apparently, I am wrong because surely you would know how many cats you have.

    I have three kids.

    I think.
