I’ve been wanting to do another giveaway for a while now, but was unsure what to do…until the fateful day about a month ago when one of my students approached me with—you guessed it—a fundraiser magazine.
She recommended the microwaveable bacon pan.
I balked at the 5 oz. of jelly beans for $21.99.
I was writing my rejection speech in my head when I turned the page and saw a reasonable purchase: a subscription to a magazine! Now, there was a fundraising investment that I could get behind. I immediately noticed the This Old House listing, because even though we already have a subscription, I thought it would be a great giveaway for my fellow DIYing bloggy friends and readers.
This Old House is the one and only magazine that both Rick and I enjoy, because it’s full of projects that require power tools and muscles as well as inspiring ideas for DIY decorating. You don’t even need to own an old house for the articles to be relevant. Here’s a sample from a recent issue:
- 10 new household uses for rubber bands (They do this every month! Vodka was the item of choice the previous month…)
- A 5-page “All About” section on kitchen islands (Also a monthly feature—one time it was windows, another time it was vinyl flooring—super helpful and informative)
- Before & after room makeovers on a budget
- Handmade holiday décor ideas
- Making a wine rack from a planter box
- How to install wainscoting
- The Top 100 Best New Home Products, as chosen by TOH
- …and lots more!
If you already have a subscription, that’s okay too…you can always give it someone else who would also find it helpful!
TO ENTER TO WIN A ONE-YEAR SUBSCRIPTION TO THIS OLD HOUSE MAGAZINE:
1. Leave a comment on this post. Make sure you include an email (either via your Blogger profile or in the comment itself) so that I can contact you if you win. Just for fun, you could also share: Are you an old house or new house person? What alternative uses for common household objects (like rubber bands) do you know of? What do your insides do whenever you approached by a fundraiser packet?
2. OPTIONAL: Earn an extra entry by linking to this giveaway on your blog and/or signing up to follow my blog via RSS or Google Friend Connect (for you non-commenting lurkers…). :) Make sure you leave an additional comment when you do either of these things! If you already follow, you can leave an additional comment saying so!
The particulars:
This giveaway is open to residents of US and Canada only and will end on Wednesday, January 4th. The winner will be chosen by Random.org and will be notified via email and a follow-up post on Friday, January 6th. The winner will have 48 hours to respond to the notification and claim their subscription. If they aren't claimed within 48 hours, another winner will be chosen via Random.org. The winner must provide a name and address to which the magazine subscription will be sent.
And that’s all you need to know! Happy (almost) New Year to everyone! :)
I used to cringe when school started up because soon the kids are coming out of the woodwork with the fund raising....magazines, wrapping paper, candles, expensive boxes or jars of candy (that tastes cheap). They'd have to sell $500 worth to win a "prize" that never worked! Luckily the fundraising has slowed down some as the kids in our neighborhood are getting older......as is Our House! I could really use the subscription to This Old House magazine....sounds like it is full of good ideas! My favorite use for a common household object is using a clothes pin to keep my Tostitoes fresh!
ReplyDeleteok this is a funny use for rubber bands i learned in my management days at abercrombie and fitch.... they can be used to remove sensors on clothing- at least the ones we had! sometimes when the sensor remover wouldn't work, i would tell customers "let me just take this to the back so i can use the special remover we have". really i did that because i didn't want customers to see how easy it was to pop off with a rubber band!

ReplyDeleteAwesome giveaway! My husband and I are old house people (we own a 1950's ranch). The process of fixing up our house has been a labor of love over the past two years. Any tips learned via the web or magazines are appreciated!
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm a follower!
ReplyDeleteOh FUN! Thanks for the chance to win! I am an old house person in theory - I love the character, woodwork, etc. However, I do still enjoy the "newness' of "newer" houses. Yep.
ReplyDelete:-)
I'd love to win this! I am an old house person, but my husband prefers something built from the 80's on. I guess we'll have to compromise when we buy our next house, maybe something from the 70's??? The best thing to me would be getting a house from the 50's or 60's and updating the flow so that it has an open layout.
ReplyDeleteI always read you in my Google Reader, but now I just became a follower via GFC.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! I love This Old House! Oddly enough, we are building a new house, but making it look very old.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of rubberbands - we're in a rental while we build and every single doorknob in the place has about 30 rubberbands wrapped around them. Weird? Yes. Too lazy to do anything about it? Yes.
And I'm a follower!!!
ReplyDeleteThis Old House is Awesome! I am definitely a fan of Old Houses, I love the character and history they have :). Thanks for the giveaway Erin!
ReplyDeleteI'm a follower!!
ReplyDeleteGreat giveaway! We have an old house that needs some tlc.
ReplyDeleteI am an old house jazzed up into modern decor person! Love your blog.

I'm an old house person. Hence the 1950s fixer upper we purchased a year ago. We are renovating but trying to keep true to much of the charm that comes with the old houses.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm definitely a follower. How could I not be??
ReplyDeleteI'm a follower!
ReplyDeleteI'm an old-house-all-fixed-up person, but I live in a middle-aged house. ;) Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely an old house person. And I cringe whenever someone approaches me with a school fundraiser. I used to teach 7th grade and some students would work so hard trying to sell hundreds of dollars worth of "stuff" only to receive a light up pen as their prize. Crazy!
ReplyDeleteI love this old house! they teach you so much, and it is useful, we have a doorbell that doesn't ring. I told my honey to go google the this ole house episode that teaches us how to fix it....
ReplyDeletebefore we purchased this newer house I really liked old houses. like 1800's style. After seeing some up close and in person and the costs associated with restoring the charm of an old house I can easily say I prefer a newer house that needs some updating.
also donate, donate, donate, because it is an itemized tax deduction, and since you own your home and are probably paying off student loan interest i imagine you guys qualify....( that is my free tax advise to you ) =)
Awesome! I used to sneak off when I worked at Lowes and read this magazine. My inspiration for our bathroom comes from it too. I'm too cheap to do magazines though! Thanks for the opportunity! The only random thing I know (and follow) is pouring unused coke into a toilet overnight and letting it sit in the bowl. It makes toilets sparkling clean in the morning! :)
ReplyDeleteActually now that I think about it, it doesn't do a whole lot. It makes the bowl whiter in older toilets but thats about it. I'm probably crazy for doing it. Oh and obviously I'm a follower of course ;)
ReplyDeleteThis would be great! We have a house built in the 40's that is "built like a rock" per the guy that helped us redo our bathroom recently. Speaking of which, baking soda and dish soap mixed into a paste is the best bathtub cleaner!
ReplyDeleteIf you save thise rubber bands till easter, wrap a few around hard boiled eggs in a fun overlapping pattern, put in dye, let dry, then remove bands. Lots of fun!
Also a follower!
ReplyDeleteI volunteer with animal welfare groups and often am the one asking for donations so I usually reciprocate by buying something for other fundraisers. I have an old house now but plan on building a new one next year. I like the "other uses" stuff. I have some for vinegar, oatmeal, vodka, olive oil, ketchup, aluminum foil, and even eggshells! kmg_14(at)hotmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteI'm more of an old house kind of gal (they tend to have more character).
ReplyDeleteI have neither a new house nor an old house, but I am definitely an old house person. Especially old farmhouses!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance!
ReplyDeleteI am a new house person but my husband is an old house person, mostly because he likes to fix things and remodel. So this last time we chose a newer house (built in 2008) that had been foreclosed on and they took the kitchen cabinets with them, flooring, etc...so he still felt like he had his project :) It worked out perfect!

This is a cool giveaway! I love This Old House :) I guess I am a "new house that looks like an old house" person... I'd like all the new stuff (things like plumbing, electricity and stuff like that that doesn't have to be updated) in the new homes but I want it to have all the character of an old home! :)
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year!
ReplyDeleteI'm an old house type of gal, so sign me up!
P.S. Love the new look of your blog :)
I prefer old houses since they have such character! Although since I'm in an apartment right now, I'd take either an old or a new! :)
ReplyDeleteOh..I'm a follower!!
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely an old house kinda gal who is living in a not so old but still needs a lot of work house. Enjoy your blog and would love a TOH magazine coming my way.
ReplyDeleteOld house girl all the way!
ReplyDeleteI follow on google reader
ReplyDeleteI want to win! I think I'm an old house person because they have more personality.
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I are the proud owners of an old house that we're showing some love - would love to win the subscription to TOH! :)
ReplyDeleteAlready a follower.....would love a 2nd chance to win!
ReplyDeleteGreat giveaway! I live (and am renovating) a 1960 ranch as we speak. It's not our "forever" home and I honestly couldn't tell you if the forever house will be old or new! There are so many pros and cons to both!
ReplyDeleteWe are "middle aged house" people! Our place was built in the 70's by my hubby's great-grandparents. We are having fun making it our own!!!
ReplyDeleteI am a follower too! You guys are so cute:)
ReplyDeleteI'm an old house person and am always looking for new ideas so this giveaway is perfect!
