My Plan to Hire an Olympic Athlete, and the Recent Evolution of Our Dining Room

Have you ever read a blog where the writers seem to bang out project after grueling project in a superhuman way? Where they flip whole houses in a matter of minutes? Where demolition is child’s play?

I have discovered their secret.

It involves Olympic athletes.

See, some of these Olympians have biceps that are approximately the same size as my torso…if my torso were the size of, say, the eastern half of the United States. And I have a feeling that one of those guys—or gals—could single-handedly (bicepedly?) redo our dining room in the time it would take me to locate the dust mask needed so I could begin sanding the trim on my own.

So the next time I need our trim sanded with 60 grit and then 100 grit and then given two coats of paint…

And the next time I need to begin a hutch makeover…

And the next time I need to spray paint the jank-tastic radiator covers…

And the next time I need to reupholster 8 even more jank-tastic chair seats…

And the next next time I need to paint the dining room walls…

…and the next time I want all that done in 6 minutes or less, I know who to call.

And while they’re working, I will be bench pressing in a nearby room.

Or eating a large brownie.

Or bench pressing a large brownie.

  1. I love everything about this post. Your new "Hey Girl" posters will spread like wildfire!

I'm loving your new colors. I thought your dining room looked good before so I wasn't sure why you hated...now I get it. Good color choices!

  2. hmmmmmmmmm -- I think you should look into removing the spindly-leg thingies from the hutch & replace them with a couple gorgeous corbels.
Looking forward to seeing the completed unjanktasticated Downton Abbey chairs!

    1. The hutch is actually built in, and the back spindle thingys are only the front half of spindle thingys, and attached to the wall. It's bizarre. So probably no replacing for us, unless we wanted to rip them off the wall and put up new paneling. No thanks. :)

  3. I will join you in the brownie eating. That sounds like the more enjoyable option :)

  4. The Michael Phelps photo CRACKED me up. I wonder the same thing all the time. With a FT job I have no idea how people knock these projects out in days. I mean they must never sleep or, like you said, have an Olympic athlete on speed dial.

  10. Hahaha! You're hilarious! I wonder if Michael Phelps is good at painting... he may be better at baking "brownies" ;)

The dining room is looking great though!

  11. So funny. I could use one of those guys myself. It would be even better if he was cute. I'm so glad you posted this because I've been wanting to paint our baseboard heaters and didn't know how. I'm going to check out what you did.

  12. don't "all" (and by "all" i mean, a handful) of olympic athletes work for home depot? i think you just need to go around to your local superstore and shop for a handy friend!

  13. You've been busy! Can't we just make decorating an olympic sport?

  14. I was wondering how these super bloggers did it; thanks for the tip...now to track down my own Michael Phelps!

  15. "Super Bloggers"!!!!!! That's a new category - maybe they should all get their own URL like www.biggestblog.superblogspot.com

Oh and I think I'll take Ryan Lochte - he may not be as fast as Phelps, but he'd be cuter to have around for all those tasks I have in mind.

  18. Ohhhh, I would have LOVED to have had some help during the recover-all-my-Craigslisted-dining-chairs process too! There were way too many layers of fabric and staples to be removed before I could even add our pretty new fabric.
