Radioactive Martian Chandelier {Bathroom Lighting Color Conundrum}

Our half bath was recently overtaken by aliens. This particular breed of alien is known to masquerade as overhead lighting. Its MO involves devouring boob lights. The fluorescent green color commonly known as Rustoleum Key Lime? Another red flag. Er, green flag.

Key lime? Seriously, if your key lime pie is this color, do not eat it. It is probably radioactive and made by aliens and you will probably spontaneously begin growing extra elbows, and teeth will probably sprout out of your head. And then the world will blow up before Tom Cruise can save the day.

(All because you ate some pie. For real.)

In case you were wondering, this is the chandelier before it was abducted by space creatures. I imagine this is what the soul of Sigourney Weaver’s crewmate looked like before a cute li’l alien burst out of his chest.

To be honest, such an electric hue is really outside my comfort zone. Good thing it’s only spray paint. My goal was to use a color in my current spray paint stash, which meant my choices were limited to a few. A few dozen. But I can change it again in just a few minutes if I decide that Alien isn’t my preferred decorating style.

I actually also pondered the idea of repainting the stripes to better match the chandy (what was supposed to be gray is more a pale purple) but then Rick, in his superior intelligence (he’s currently killing the medicine category on Jeopardy), said “Why, because you loved painting stripes on our crooked house so much the first time?” And then I remembered.

Alien or not, I still think it’s all an improvement over the other creatures of the sky that formerly inhabited the room.

What do you think? Can I make it work? Or should I send this alien back to Mars and pick a less extraterrestrial color? All kind thoughts and ideas are welcome. :)

  1. I think I love it! But if you don't I think a sunny yellow would be gorgeous too.

I love love love it when you post before pictures of your house. I really admire how much the old owners just really committed to that birdhouse theme! Bless them. I'd love to see their new house!

  2. It's definitely an improvement over the birds! I think it's a really fun pop of color actually. Your mention of boob lights made me laugh because we have an 11 week old in the house who is nursing. When we brought her home and hung out with her in the living room she would cry when she looked up. When we looked up it turned out we had a giant boob right on the ceiling!!! Never noticed it before!

  3. i love it! and i think it works with the tone of the gray- it's fun and unexpected! i would keep the rest really toned down and let that be the stand out quirky piece.

  4. I think this is fantastic and before actually reading into your blog and seeing it was an unexpected choice, I figured it was totally the point. If, however, green isn't your thing, I think a plum would look phenomenal as well. ;)

  5. I LOVE IT. I painted our entire bathroom almost that exact color green - it was called carolina parakeet. it literally glowed.) So I think the pop of color is awesome. (Actually, I found a blog that used the color!!!! http://susanweinroth.typepad.com/a_little_bit_of_me/2007/05/cloudless_carol.html)

Anyway, I say go with it for a good 6 months. But that's just me.

    1. I think I will be waiting for now. Rick won’t appreciate taking it down again quite so soon, anyway. ;)

  6. I vote to keep it. I really like the colour....and I think it looks great with the stripes. And I agree with Cassie - keep the rest of it really toned down.

  7. At first it was a shock to look at...then it grew on my in the short time it took to read your post. I agree with Katie...leave it for 6 months and see if YOU like it.

  8. Its definitly colorful, but I agree with another commenter, I think yellow would be just as cheery but flow a little better with the sophisticated grays and blues in the room already. Which is gorgeous by the way.

  9. Obviously it depends on the rest of the accessories in the room, but I think painting the mirror a darker color (maybe pantone's color of the year emerald?) will ground it and not feel so out of left field?

I actually like it, too. But to make it work a little better, I'd work in a few other accessories too. Paint the sconces the same Key Lime color (I agree that if THAT is pie, I'd gag!). Then find some cute artwork of peeper frogs, add some bright lime green towels and you're done. I'll bet that the new baby will stare at that chandy every time you go in that bathroom!

  12. Love the transformation of your bathroom! That mirror--oh my! Also love the quirky color of the chandy. Keep the color for now, and you can always change it when you get tired of it.

  13. I really like the green! It's such a fun pop of color in there (the whole bathroom looks great btw!).

  14. I have never seen your half bath before!! It's gorgeous and I love it!! That pop of colour on the chandelier is amazing. Those stripes are beautiful and the mirror and vanity are great too! Seriously- just get your alien friend to beam this up and put it in my house please : )

  15. It's cute. That is just the cutest little bathroom ever ;)
Perhaps a lovely shade of blue, like peacock or maybe even a different shade of green like emerald...then you can get pretty towels and accessories to match...instead of putting alien decor in there. lol. But, I do think you can totally rock the bright green too!!
I painted a table lamp a very similar color and I almost threw it away. Actually my husband may have tossed it. It was really bad. and bright.

    1. OOOOH I never considered the possibility of extending the alien theme. This could be fun. Perhaps some glow-in-the-dark stars on the ceiling? ;)

  17. That looks awesome! Even if you don't love it right now I would leave it like that at least a couple weeks. That will give you time to figure out if you like it or if it's going to cause you to develop a nervous tick because it's too extreme.

  18. Hmmm... I love green and I have a phone case this color, but I don't know if I dig it in your bathroom. Everything else looks so classy and then it's BAM in your face slime colored chandy.

I'd like a bold, dark color instead, like eggplant or navy, even fuschia would be a better fit.

    1. Dark was my initial thought but I thought I'd try something out of my comfort zone. We'll see what happens. :)

Not gonna lie... after reading through the rest of the comments I am the minority here but I do not like it. It definitely stands out but with that being the only bright green thing in the room.....no me gusta.

  20. I love the stripes, but they do look slightly purple-ish (maybe it's just the grey of the vanity in the foreground emphasizing it, I don't know...)

As for the key-slime chandy -- not so much. If it weren't for the tinge of the stripes I'd suggest a turquoise or other bright blue.

  25. I love it, Erin. It's funky and gives the calm of the room a shot of adrenaline. Keep it!!!

  27. Hmm... I don't LOVE it... but I don't really dislike it either... I agree with the person that said maybe if you put a few more little things of that color to tie it in?

I also agree with the peacock blue suggestion :)

  28. Dude. It totally rocks. Keep it.

  29. I kind of love it. It doesn't look too radioactive with all the other serene parts of the bathroom.

  30. I love the striped walls. Beautiful. Not crazy about that shade of green on the chandelier. It's too neon bright. I would go with white myself.

  31. Absolutely love everything about this room! It's perfect!

  32. I love the neon pop of color, although I'd understand if it just wasn't to your liking. It adds a modern edge to the room. I think it works well with the gray in the room also.

  33. I love the chandelier! I want to do something like that for my daughter's bedroom makeover. Thanks for the inspiration!

  34. I think it totally works, not sure what that makes me, but it seems like just the right pop of alien to me. And that picture of you painting stripes is exactly what I envision whenever I think I want some stripage. :)
