Pool Boys and My Plot to Own Ducklings

By giving myself a slight bloggy break over the past few weeks, I have managed to accomplish a lot of…absolutely nothing in the way of home improvement. We’ve chosen instead to do all of the following:

  • lots of family stuff
  • get a new job for next school year (me)
  • join the rest of the world in its love affair with Downton Abbey
  • pet the cats
  • open the pool
  • hire a pool boy.

This particular pool boy came with his own pool girl.

Yes, Mr. and Mrs. Mallard have chosen our now-open pool as their private waterfront residence. It’s like the Hamptons, for ducks.

They apparently didn’t get the memo that there is a lake approximately 150 feet away.

This is, of course, an improvement over the black lagoon that we dealt with last year.

But, nonetheless, Rick would like them to stop pooping on the rim around the pool. Gingerbread would like to eat them. I would like them to have babies, and have told them so.

So far, they aren’t complying with any of our wishes.

Have you ever had any unexpected animal guests? Any pool stories to share? Who wants to help me name the ducklings?

  1. Haha! Love it! I have a weird love of ducks. They were my favorite animal when I was a kid! I would die if you had baby ducks in your backyard! So cute!

    Congrats on the new job!

  2. I had a duck growing up. Her name was Roger. (Yes, you read that right.) It's a great duck name. She won best pet at the fair. Man, I love ducks.

    Congrats on the new job!!

  3. That's so cool!!! I'd want them to have ducklings too but it would be really sad if the cat got the ducklings.

We had a fox in our backyard last year. It freaked me out. I wouldn't let my dog outside for a week.

  4. Ha! We haven't had any pooping ducks, but we do have tons of baby chipmunks that torment Stewie to no end. Good luck, and I hope they make babies for you, lol.

  5. New job? Congrats! Will you be changing subjects/grades or anything? And congratulations on the new duck tenants. Hoping they bless you with a quiver full of grand-ducks, which do not defecate.

  6. Aww! I love ducks! I hope they comply and give you some little ducklings. Ducklings are adorable!

    Congrats on the new job!

At my parents we have had a slew of random animal guests including but not limited to- a fox, a wolf, a peacock, lots of bunnies, snakes and even an emu. All great stories! lol. That's in addition to the pets they have owned which include ducks, chickens, cows and dogs. Lots of animal encounters going on over there!

  7. I have a pool story!

Once upon a time, Amy discovered that Erin has a pool and became insanely jealous.

    The end.

  9. So is the new job on the to-do list or the 'done' list? How exciting!

Love your pool couple. I can understand your hubby's concerns, but I hope you get your wish and Gingerbread doesn't!

  10. grew up in a sort of woodsy area of connecticut. one day, my siblings and i heard a hawk screeching outside the house, and circling the yard. he plopped down next to our in-ground pool and was pacing around the edge. my brother went outside and shoo'd him away and, while he was out there, decided to do the maintenance my dad had asked him to do in the morning.

he lifted off the skimmer cover to find a floating, scared-to-death pigeon, who had sought safety from the hawk by landing in our pool, and got sucked up by the skimmer! he was so traumatized, my brother lifted him out of the skimmer with his bare hands, put him on the toasty paving stones next to the pool, and my brother waited by him until the pigeon dried off and flew away, unharmed.

  11. Ducks are evil! I had a run-in with one at age four (probably my fault, apparently they don't understand how to play keep-away) that sealed the deal. That's crazy! I'd go with Daffy or Daisy for one and Howard for the other.

    2. lol--I was just hired for 7th and 10th English (primarily 7th—just one section of 10th) at a district just 10 min. from our house. I’ve been driving 45….so I’m pretty excited about that. :) God’s timing was perfect with it, too!

  13. Did you say Downton Abbey? To.Die.For. -- totally been caught up in Edwardian fashion for years - their costumes put me over the edge. Stories were pretty good, too. You grow to love a few/hate a few characters & can't wait for the new season to start!

Living in the desert we don't get many ducks. Two years in a row, though, we had a mallard & his lady overnight (or two) in our pool to escape spring storms. Drove our English Springer Spaniel absolutely mad!

  14. We have a couple of ducks who visit the neighbours yard and then hop the fence to eat the birdseed which has fallen from the feeder. Fred and Ethel are their names - from I Love Lucy - you're too young to remember. Anyways, Ethel laid two eggs under my Japanese maple about 3 weeks ago, but nothing has happened. It's been fun watching them. I think they've moved on now that the pool is open though. Fun to look at.

    1. I Love Lucy!! There is no tv like that anymore. I might be too young but I'm fan all the same. ;)

  15. So jealous of your pool! But not the duck poop... no one wants to set their icy cold adult beverage in duck poo! ;)

  16. OMG, this is why I love animals so much. It would never occur to them that the family they adopted wouldn't be overjoyed to be graced by their presence and their poop.

Hey, btw, good luck with your career move!

  17. How about Beavis and Butthead? Kidding....as much as I admire ducks I would not want them anywhere near a pool. Poopoo = yuckiness :)

  18. This post cracks me up. So funny. I hope we get to see little ducklings pictures soon!

  19. Those duckies are beautiful! The poop...not so much. I grew up on a lake so we had tons of ducks around. Ever stepped in duck diarrhea...barefoot? Horrible. Just horrible. And my ducks were much less beautiful than yours, so it was very hard to forgive them. (You know, the kind that start off cute as chickies and then turn ugly with weird red stuff on their faces. Ugh.)

Our most recent animal guest is an electric green iguana. (Plans to make his blog debut soon.) We are keeping our eyes out for giant pythons escaping the Everglades and showing up in residential areas. It's an actual epidemic. I literally check the backyard before letting the kids out. Crazy, huh?
