Trimming the Master Bedroom

In my opinion, the following announcement is good news. In your opinion, it's good news because it doesn't involve a dead rodent. (Sorry.) In my mom's opinion, it's bad news because it has nothing to do with grandchildren. (Sorry again.) The announcement: we have FINALLY moved into our bedroom. Well, finally, meaning two weeks ago. I'm a little behind on the times.

Do you like what we've done with the adjoining room?

Putting up clean new trim was the last thing on our enormous list that had to happen before we could move in, so on one of his days off a couple weeks ago, Rick got busy making it happen.

The old trim had about 4 layers of paint on it, and while we could have taken the time to strip it all down, that just seemed like way more work that we wanted to put into it, not to mention the fact that it almost certainly had lead paint mixed in there at least once. And let's face it: we're already wacky enough without inhaling lead particles.

Um. Why do I do these things?

In order to preserve the original appearance of the trim, though, we replaced it all with trim that looks identical. We bought the wood from Lowe's (eight 1x6x12 pine boards), making our total to replace all of the trim less than $100) and set up shop in our enclosed porch, where we primed and painted and sanded off cat hair from a certain small feline who thought our wood was her own personal "I'm queen of the world" lounge...

...and then Rick cut it with a borrowed miter saw. This photo was taken after I wiped the drool off of his face. Power tools have a strange effect on humans of the testosterone-riddled variety.

Then said Testosterone-Riddled Variety of Human nailed all of the trim to the wall with finishing nails, filled the nail holes with wood putty and the cracks with caulk, and gave the trim one last coat of semi-gloss white paint.

And just in case you ever questioned my devotion to my cats, we replaced the standard-depth windowsills with extra-deep sills so that my furry babies could sit on them even with the windows closed, which, around here, is approximately 8 months out of the year. No wonder GB thought the wood was her own personal lounge...

So sweet.

I'm pretty sure that if I hadn't married Rick, I would be a dowdy little Cat Lady who travels the globe wearing floral frocks that I sewed myself, bringing poor stray felines back to my Cat Mansion where I'd build them custom windowsills and read them bedtime stories.

Mr. Buffy Moves to Dubai. No wonder the cat looks transfixed.

In all seriousness, though, we're beyond thrilled to finally be in the "This Room Is No Longer Hazardous" stage of our bedroom makeover, after months of demolition, redoing the textured ceiling, and refinishing the floors. AND, this is what we can see from our windows:

(Did you know that we live in the middle of nowhere, next to a lake, across from the world's tiniest post office, and a good five miles from the nearest traffic light? It's perfection.)

So: what will you do for your pets? Build them windowsills? Sing them lullabies? Register for the Rodent-of-the-Month Club for their frolicking pleasure? I'd love to hear about the furry friends who rock your world. :)

  1. Your bedroom looks amazing! Love the floors, chandy and your comforter. And love, love, love that you made the sills extra deep for your kitties. Sounds like something I would do. Here's a link to introduce you to my kitties. http://wildwoodcreek.blogspot.com/2011/05/best-cat-ever.html

  2. I love watching all the work you guys are doing. It's amazing how trim can really take make everything look complete! I have 2 dogs (did have 3 until my Shelby passed this May) and I would do anything for them. I always tell people I have 4 kids, just two are very hairy and walk on all fours! If you've seen my blog, you've seen my dogs. There in everything!

  4. I'm in love with your bedroom. It's all fancy and stuff. That chandelier is so darn pretty.

Your cats may be more spoiled than my dog. That is impressive.

I'm REALLY glad you guys didn't expose yourself to the lead paint. REALLY glad. :P

  5. When I was younger and hadn't made a definite career choice, I told everyone who asked that my future plans were to be a cat lady. Now I just have one cat, Fievel (the hubs named him after a mouse), and a puppy named Indy (although I suspect her of being a small horse in disguise).

The bedroom is looking great! All of our trim needs redone, but we'll probably wait for new windows to tackle that (they're all painted shut!).

  6. My screen porch has a 9 in ledge on the bottom railings - just so my two cats can lounge. Also nice for putting potted plants on - which I can't - due to said cats. But then they come first, right?

  7. The room is beautiful. I have to know...where is the duvet cover from? I might have to be a big old copy cat and get me one of those. I want to hear more about where you live. It sounds intriguing!

    2. Your master bedroom looks LOVELY. Relaxing, calming, sophisticated but still comfortable...love! And your color choices...well, they are perfection. Can't wait to see how you finish everything.
    3. Mr. Buffy moves to Dubai....too much. I was rolling.
    4. I had no idea you lived in such bliss. I am a country girl and long for the days when I can escape again to open spaces, trees, and room to breathe.

  10. I love your duvet cover -- it's gorgeous! It must be so refreshing to have your (now beautiful) bedroom back. The floor looks amazing, too.

Oh, and I stripped at least 8 layers of paint off all the upstairs' woodwork. It was fuuuuun *cough*horrible*cough*. It was quite the job but definitely worth it to me in the end. I was worried about lead poisoning, too, so I got my blood tested. It was negative. :)

  14. Your bedroom is so pretty!!! I love the duvet! When I had a cat (RIP little Buddy) I was always buying him treats and new toys (because I'm sure he got bored with the ones he had). Once I even brought him to my friends soccer game to give him some fresh air...turns out he doesn't really like soccer.
I hope you have a fantastic weekend!

  16. Thanks everyone! :) The duvet cover is the organic pintuck one from West Elm:

Solid + texture=I won't get tired of it but it still looks interesting. :)

  22. Again, love what you did with your bedroom (that blue ceiling just kills me). You get extra credit for the new trim...and for showing us your brains on lead paint :)

  23. YAY! Loving the new trim and yes, the fact that this room is now livable. When we first moved in, the master bedroom was the only livable room in the house, so I remember what a HUGE deal it was to be able to use the living room for the first time. Sadly, our master bedroom has been neglected ever since. Yours is looking amazing though!!
